Reevaluation of Poly(ethylene-alt-propylene)-block-Polydimethylsiloxane Phase Behavior Uncovers Topological Close-Packing and Epitaxial Quasicrystal Growth

چکیده
Reanalysis of an asymmetric poly(ethylene-alt-propylene)-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PEP-PDMS) diblock copolymer first investigated in 1999 has revealed a rich phase behavior including dodecagonal quasicrystal (DDQC), Frank–Kasper σ phase, and body-centered cubic (BCC) packing at high temperature adjacent to the disordered state. On subjecting sample large amplitude oscillatory shear well below σ-BCC order–order transition (TOOT), small-angle X-ray scattering evidenced emergence twinned BCC that, on heating, underwent unusually anisotropic DDQC Surprisingly, we observe no evidence this apparent epitaxy heating or cooling through equilibrium transition. We rationalize these results terms shear-induced BCC-DDQC favored by micelle translation-mediated ordering dynamics far TOOT.

Molecular beam epitaxial growth of topological insulators.
With the molecular beam epitaxy technique, layer-by-layer growth of atomically flat topological insulator Bi(2) Te(3) and Bi(2) Se(3) thin films has been realized on Si(111) and graphene substrates, respectively. The growth criteria by which intrinsic topological insulators can readily be obtained is established. By using in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling ...

For various lattice gas models with nearest neighbour exclusion (and, in one case, second-nearest neighbour exclusion as well), we obtain lower bounds on m, the average number of particles on the non-excluded lattice sites closest ∗We dedicate this work to the memory of Ann Stell, beloved friend of OP and beloved wife of GS.

متن کاملDeceptions in Quasicrystal Growth
We discuss a new general phenomenon pertaining to tiling models of quasicrystal growth. It is known that with Penrose tiles no (de-terministic) local matching rules exist which guarantee defect-free tiling for regions of arbitrary large size. We prove that this property holds quite generally: namely, that the emergence of defects in quasicrystal growth is unavoidable for all aperiodic tiling mo...
متن کاملUniversality of Random Close Packing ?
In 1611 Kepler proposed that the densest packing of spheres could be achieved by stacking close-packed planes of spheres. In such a packing, the spheres occupy π/ √ 18 ≈74.05% of space. The Kepler conjecture was (almost certainly) proved in 1998 by Thomas Hales. When we pour a large number of equal-sized spheres in a container and shake them down, we do not obtain the Kepler packing. Rather a d...
